{"id":649,"date":"2019-09-05T20:36:55","date_gmt":"2019-09-06T01:36:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wisconsinbirds.org\/iba\/?page_id=649"},"modified":"2019-09-05T20:36:55","modified_gmt":"2019-09-06T01:36:55","slug":"wisconsin-point","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/www.wisconsinbirds.org\/iba\/sites\/wisconsin-point\/","title":{"rendered":"Wisconsin Point"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"pl-649\"  class=\"panel-layout\" ><div id=\"pg-649-0\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-649-0-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-649-0-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<h3>Site Description<\/h3>\n<p>This IBA encompasses all of Allouez Bay as well as the eastern section of a long coastal barrier sand spit separating the bay from Lake Superior.\u00a0 Habitats present here include open water, several miles of open sand beach and dunes, small interdunal wetlands, lowland brush, mature red and white pine forest, and young deciduous forest.<\/p>\n<h3>Ornithological Importance<\/h3>\n<p>Wisconsin Point is a well-known migratory bird concentration area.\u00a0 Its location at the head of Lake Superior makes it a natural bottleneck, funneling birds migrating along the west side of the lake.\u00a0 Shorebirds, waterfowl, and landbirds all use the site heavily.\u00a0 Hundreds to thousands of shorebirds of 26 species have been recorded here.\u00a0 Waterfowl, loons and grebes are found in the open waters, while the brushy and forested portions of the point can hold very high numbers of landbirds\u2014several thousand individuals have been recorded in single-day counts.\u00a0 Large numbers of gulls and terns also are found here, including Caspian, common, and black terns and Bonaparte\u2019s gulls.\u00a0 The site also reliably produces Wisconsin rarities such as jaegers, black-legged kittiwake, Arctic tern, fork-tailed flycatcher, and Harris\u2019s sparrow.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pgc-649-0-1\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-649-0-1-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"1\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<div id=\"attachment_650\" style=\"width: 502px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-650\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-650\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wisconsinbirds.org\/iba\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/wisconsinpoint.jpg\" alt=\"Wisconsin Point, photo by Ryan Brady\" width=\"492\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.wisconsinbirds.org\/iba\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/wisconsinpoint.jpg 492w, http:\/\/www.wisconsinbirds.org\/iba\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/wisconsinpoint-300x152.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 492px) 100vw, 492px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-650\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wisconsin Point, photo by Ryan Brady<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Site Description This IBA encompasses all of Allouez Bay as well as the eastern section of a long coastal barrier sand spit separating the bay from Lake Superior.\u00a0 Habitats present here include open water, several miles of open sand beach and dunes, small interdunal wetlands, lowland brush, mature red and white pine forest, and young&#8230;
