{"id":313,"date":"2019-08-16T16:23:41","date_gmt":"2019-08-16T21:23:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wisconsinbirds.org\/iba\/?page_id=313"},"modified":"2019-08-18T09:53:20","modified_gmt":"2019-08-18T14:53:20","slug":"avon-bottoms","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/www.wisconsinbirds.org\/iba\/sites\/avon-bottoms\/","title":{"rendered":"Avon Bottoms"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"pl-313\"  class=\"panel-layout\" ><div id=\"pg-313-0\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-313-0-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-313-0-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<h3>Site Description<\/h3>\n<p>This site on the Sugar River includes the Avon Bottoms Wildlife Area and Avon Bottoms and Swenson Wet Prairie State Natural Areas.\u00a0 It contains mature floodplain forest and is one of the few sites in Wisconsin that has southern tree species such as sycamore.\u00a0 Smaller areas of native and planted prairie, cool-season grasses, and oak savanna also are found here, including high-quality wet prairie and sedge meadow at the Swenson Wet Prairie SNA.<\/p>\n<p>NRCS has acquired some 3,000 acres of conservation easements on private lands surrounding Avon Bottoms Wildlife Area and will be restoring these croplands throughout 2010, widening the floodplain forest corridor along the Sugar River and planting wet prairie.\u00a0 These restorations will greatly increase habitat availability for floodplain forest and wet grassland birds and is a fortuitous and fitting way to mark the 50th anniversary of Avon Bottoms Wildlife Area, which it celebrates in 2010.<\/p>\n<h3>Ornithological Importance<\/h3>\n<p>Avon Bottoms provides habitat for numerous floodplain forest species, including yellow-crowned night-heron, red-shouldered hawk, prothonotary warbler, cerulean warbler, yellow-billed cuckoo, and wood thrush.\u00a0 Grassland areas support small numbers of Henslow\u2019s sparrow, field sparrow, grasshopper sparrow, and Eastern meadowlark.\u00a0 The ongoing restorations should provide for increased numbers of all these species.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pgc-313-0-1\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-313-0-1-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"1\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<div id=\"attachment_314\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-314\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-314\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wisconsinbirds.org\/iba\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Avon-Bottoms-Andy-Paulios.jpg\" alt=\"Avon Bottoms, photo by Andy Paulios\" width=\"400\" height=\"268\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.wisconsinbirds.org\/iba\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Avon-Bottoms-Andy-Paulios.jpg 400w, http:\/\/www.wisconsinbirds.org\/iba\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Avon-Bottoms-Andy-Paulios-300x201.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.wisconsinbirds.org\/iba\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Avon-Bottoms-Andy-Paulios-272x182.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-314\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Avon Bottoms, photo by Andy Paulios<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Site Description This site on the Sugar River includes the Avon Bottoms Wildlife Area and Avon Bottoms and Swenson Wet Prairie State Natural Areas.\u00a0 It contains mature floodplain forest and is one of the few sites in Wisconsin that has southern tree species such as sycamore.\u00a0 Smaller areas of native and planted prairie, cool-season grasses,&#8230;
