Dunbar Barrens

Site Description

This site, encompassing Dunbar Barrens State Natural Area, features a pine barrens community with stands of aspen, oak, and jack pine interspersed throughout a more open area dominated by grasses, sedges, and shrubs such as blueberry and prairie willow.  Low granite outcrops and depressions or “frost pockets” are scattered throughout.

Ornithological Importance

Many pine barrens species breed here, including upland sandpiper, brown thrasher, clay-colored sparrow, field sparrow, and vesper sparrow.
