Citizen-Based Monitoring Efforts Pay Off

The IBA Program used a 2006 Citizen-based Monitoring Partnership Program grant to recruit and coordinate volunteers to conduct migratory bird surveys at seven nominated sites: UW-Madison Lakeshore Nature Preserve, Point Beach State Forest, Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary, Seagull Bar, Green Bay West Shore Wetlands, South Shore Wetlands, and Schlitz Audubon Nature Center.

The data collected through these efforts contributed to all of these sites being approved by the IBA Technical Committee in late 2006.  Several of these sites already have been dedicated as official IBAs—Point Beach, Schiltz Audubon (incorporated into the Ozaukee Bight Lakeshore Migration Corridor IBA), and the Lakeshore Nature Preserve.

Citizen monitoring can make a difference!  The following people contributed their time and talent to this effort: Betsy Bartelt; Kim Benton; Craig Brabant; Ryan Brady; David Bratley; Bernie Brouchoud; Eric Bruhnke; Joan Campbell; John Feith; Charlie Geiger; Colleen Lee; Roma Lenehan; Susan MacKreth; Tim Oksiuta; Andy Paulios; Scott Posner; Tom Prestby; Kristin Repyak; April Sansom; Leon Solberg; Charles Sontag; Nick Walton; Jay Watson; Matt Welter; Julie Woodcock; and John Woodcock.  The IBA Program thanks them for their support of bird conservation.
