Site Description

This site, on the Nicolet portion of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, contains one of the largest and most intact areas of northern hardwood forest in the state.  Upland forests of sugar maple, basswood, oaks, birches, hemlock, white pine, and aspen predominate.  Lowland hardwood and conifer forests, bogs, shrub swamps, and lakes also are found.

Ornithological Importance

This IBA provides excellent habitat for birds of extensive forested landscapes, including many forest interior species and neotropical migrants.  Species found in high numbers include yellow-bellied sapsucker, least flycatcher, black-throated blue warbler, black-throated green warbler, mourning warbler, and rose-breasted grosbeak.
