Site Description

This site includes both Germania Marsh State Wildlife Area and Comstock Bog State Natural Area.  It consists of a complex mosaic of sedge meadow, wet prairie, and open bog surrounded by oak barrens and oak forest.  The sedge meadows are of high quality and are some of the most extensive in southern Wisconsin.

Ornithological Importance

Priority sedge meadow breeders here include American bittern, Northern harrier, sedge wren, Le Conte’s sparrow, and one of the southernmost populations of yellow rail known in the state.  Priority shrub and savanna species also breeding here include black-billed cuckoo, willow flycatcher, brown thrasher, and blue-winged warbler.  Thousands of sandhill cranes use the site for staging in the fall.
